Update on my alcohol odyssey, for those who have been following along: I cut my consumption down to once every full moon by making coffee all day long, with which I would substitute any cravings for beer. Then, knowing that that much caffeine isn't so great for my health either, I started making batches of cinnamon tea: 1 tbsp ground cinnamon to 6 quarts of water lasts me about 3 days. I've been doing this for several weeks now, and it's working well. But I didn't have this crutch available when I went to Mexico recently, so just let myself drink beer every day there. I was afraid that when I got back I would continue, but no, I'm right back to coffee and cinnamon tea. Also, as an added incentive, when I started the "full moon drinking" thing I also allowed myself sweets on every new moon, which usually means a brownie or two. Prior to this, I would typically eat sweets only 3 times a year or so.
