jc blog - tales of a modern-day nomadic hunter-gatherer

Follow jcomeau_ictx on Twitter This is the weblog of Intrepid Wanderer. You never know what you might find here; graphic descriptions of bodily functions, computer programming secrets, proselytizing for the antichrist, miscellaneous ranting and kvetching, valuable information on living off the land... if you don't share my rather weird interests you may want to try slashdot instead.

You can consider my Del.icio.us links an extension to my blog, as are my LifeTango goals and my other to-do items. My to-buy list is also public, but only for sharing any useful ideas that might be there; I'm not requesting charity, neither do I offer it.

You can find me easily in google searches, as jcomeau, jcomeau_ictx, or jcomeauictx. There are lots of other jcomeaus, but AFAIK I'm the only jcomeau_ictx out there so far.

If you want to comment on anything you see here, try the new Facebook comments, reachable by clicking the "[comment]" link at the end of each post. If for some reason that isn't working, go ahead and email me, jc.unternet.net. You know what to do with the first dot. Make the 'subject' line something reasonably intelligent-looking or it goes plunk! into the spambasket unread.

This RSS feed may or may not work. Haven't fiddled with it in forever. RSS Feed

found out today I was accepted into NWCU School of Law, no great accomplishment I guess, since it's a for-profit school, but it means a lot to me. also, the refried beans I made for Kristin's birthday party all got eaten, and got a compliment of "very good" from Hilda, a professional Mexican chef, and I don't think she was just being polite because she and others were packing it in.

I guess I'm going to put the law school on my credit card and try to pay it off over 4 to 6 months. yes, back in debt, but only for a short time period. [comment]

finished reading Will Lowrey's Simple Strategies for the Bar Exam in about an hour. it will likely come in handy in a year or so. [comment]

finished the Justice course tonight. took me about 10 days this time; I never finished it any of the previous times, as I had always gotten hung up on Rawls.

missed about 10 questions on the self-test questions, so if there were 3 per lecture (I'm not sure), I got 62 out of 72 right. not too bad, but not really good either. some of the concepts are still foreign to me. this is another thing that to really understand, I've got to go over it several times. but now it's getting close to the 24-month countdown to my law degree, and if I really want to go that route, I'm going to have to limit my focus. I'm now the proud owner of a jar of Vegemite, thanks to Lola and Dave who conspired to smuggle one to me. near as I can gather, it's the result of a meeting of various Australian brewers and manufacturing firms who met at a pub one night after an industrial symposium, and schemed up a plan to avoid the risk and expense of their current practice of trucking their industrial wastes onto aboriginal lands under cover of night.

anyway, as they say, it's an "acquired taste". I made a burrito out of it, we'll see where it goes from there. [comment]

my tamarind cider was at peak flavor yesterday or the day before. it's now gone flat and is getting a bit vinegary. and it never developed any noticeable alcohol content. [comment]

after my aborted half-marathon jog today -- a new fence had gone up across my usual path -- I went down a path to the arroyo across from Marina Palmira and found a large crop of Rumex crispus (curly dock) I don't remember ever seeing before. certainly it's a rare sight in La Paz. [comment]

finally, after about 3 weeks, my brine ferments were all skunked up with kahm yeast today. all except the most recent, which as of this morning hadn't even started to sour. but it's starting to smell a little better now.

my tamarind cider is, again, not very good. it tastes OK but it's not alcoholic, and it has a weird smell reminiscent of paint thinner or linseed oil.

started sprouting some cilantro (coriander) yesterday, and some cumin today. we'll see how it goes. [comment]
